Carnivale was an awesome show from HBO that was canceled after only 24 episodes it was set in the United States during the Great Depression. The theme behind the show was the depiction of the battle between good and evil and the struggle between free will and destiny. It involved elements of Christianity, gnosticism, and Masonic rituals, including the Knights Templar.
